Re: fathers day
One of my friends on another messageboard suggested that those of us who don't have fathers (or alternatively, who don't have fathers worth celebrating), should buy ourselves something nice instead. I thought that was quite a good idea.
Re: fathers day
...because doing that isn't selfish at all

Re: fathers day
No. No, it isn't.
The definition of selfish is: Self"ish\, a. 1. Caring supremely or unduly for one's self; regarding
one's own comfort, advantage, etc., in disregard, or at the expense, of
those of others.
To put it another way, doing something only for yourself, AND without caring how it affects other people even if you know it may affect them negatively.
No one is going to lose out in any way by me getting myself a treat. My father wouldn't be getting anything anyway. I earn my own money; I'm not indebted to anyone else; my bills are paid; my obligations are fulfilled; I'm not doing any form of penance. Therefore there is no reason why I should not get myself something.
Why do you find it selfish? What would you find more morally acceptable?
